Why Do Employers Check your Credit Report?

February 1st, 2008

An increasing number of employers are now checking credit reports prior to hiring someone.  Many people do not agree with this, and feel that it is unfair.  Afterall, not all people have bad credit because of mishandling their finances.

So, why do employers check your credit?

Employers believe that your credit report explains a lot about your behavior.  They believe that if you manage your money right, that you’ll also perform well within your career.  Although I understand where they are coming from, I don’t think a credit report can show the entire picture.  There are often times when credit can be ruined under circumstances beyond someone’s control.

Perhaps employers should discuss with the potential candidates about why their credit is not up to par.  What do you think?

actually, the truth is that if you cannot manage your personal finances better, i wonder how you can work or manage a bigger assignment.

People get what they deserve. All these people with bad credit (overspending and borrowing) said it was ok to drug test a pot smoker who performed well at work. Well the table has turned. Also all the fat, out of shape cigerette smokers who were ok with drug testing at work may not get jobs now for their health problems. Good

This is partly correct and partly wrong. While in case of some people this can actually bring up the real picture on the other hand it can portray something weird. It can always happen that due to some mishap a person runs into bad credit…so there has to be some other way with this to know about the person the employer hires.
