A Humanitarian Loan Company?

January 11th, 2007

I was browsing the web the other night, and I came across a site that caught my attention.  It’s an organization called Kiva.org.  It’s based on a peer-to-peer lending platform like Prosper.com, but with a major difference.  Instead of lending money to other Americans, Kiva lets you lend money to individuals in developing countries.  This gives the loan recipient a chance to work their way out of poverty, and at the same, build hope for the future.

By becoming a lender through Kiva, you are not only contributing to a charitable cause, but also helping someone improve their way of life.

Thanks for your post on Kiva. You’ve given your readers a chance to get connected to something worthwhile, yet in a very practical way. Just to clarify, unlike a traditional loan, there is no interest earned. This helps to keep such an important source of capital accessible to aspiring entreprenuers in impoverished communities. However, it is difficult to ascertain the social return on knowing that you have given a hand to help someone overcome the poverty trap.

I think this scheme is something that is way over due. I like the idea of helping out an under priviledged person, thus helping there community and from what I have seen, my investment is more secure than lending money to a westerner.
